The principle of contact lenses is the same as for glasses; they bend light and redirect it towards your retina to correct your prescription. Contact lenses are placed directly on the surface of your eye and they can correct short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and age-related long-sightedness (presbyopia).
When you’re short-sighted you find it difficult to clearly see objects in the distance. When you’re long-sighted you find it hard to focus on objects up close. These are the two most comment conditions that require vision correction.

If you have astigmatism your vision can be blurry at all distances. Soft toric contact lenses correct astigmatism by compensating for the individual differences in the shape of your eye, enabling light to focus correctly on the retina at the back of your eye. ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses for ASTIGMATISM have EYELID STABILISED design which uses the power of your natural blink to help keep your lens in position to give you clear, stable vision.

Presbyopia is an age-related condition whereby you find it increasingly hard to focus sharply on near objects, especially in low light. Presbyopia commonly starts to affect people around the age of 40. With multifocal contact lenses you can see clearly without reading glasses, and in the distance.
